Dr Igor Tabrizian is an author and lecturer in Nutritional
Medicine and the Director of Medical Training. With 14 years experience
in a wide variety of specialties in Australia and abroad he started a
combined private practice of General practice and Anaesthetics. He now
runs the successful Nutritional Medicine Clinic in Perth's northern suburbs,
which trains and employs doctors interested in the method called Diagnostic
Orthomolecular Medicine (DOM).
Dr Igor Tabrizian completed medical school at the University of Western Australia in 1982. He initially worked in many medical specialties (Neurology, Diabetology, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Psychiatry, Renal Medicine, Dermatology, Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, Oncology, Haematology, Nuclear Medicine, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopaedics and Cardio-Thoracic Surgery) before beginning training in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care. He worked in hospital medicine in Australia and abroad for 14 years before venturing into a combined private practice of General practice and Anaesthetics. With a love and interest in biochemistry, he applied this knowledge in his general practice with good results. Consequently, his Nutritional Medicine practice is based on applied biochemistry. So, in 1999 he began to practice solely in Nutritional Medicine and now runs a successful Nutritional Medicine clinic in Perth’s northern suburbs, which trains and employs doctors interested in this specialty. His method is called Diagnostic Orthomolecular Medicine (DOM). He has written 6 books on Nutritional Medicine including a Textbook (The Visual Textbook of Nutritional Medicine). These books are available online at www.nutritionreviewservice.com.au. He has lectured nationally and internationally for lay and professional groups on Nutritional Medicine. He runs an apprenticeship scheme for Medical Doctors and to date has trained 14 local GP’s. Information on upcoming lectures and courses can be found at www.nutritionreviewservice.com.au also. His lectures are renowned for making difficult concepts easy by the use of common analogies. He is able to take large amounts of disparate information and simplify such into bite-size pieces. His clinic employs 8 practitioners and is located at Unit 3/116 Cockman Rd Greenwood Western Australia (tel 08 9342 0471). From 2005, Dr Tabrizian specialized in Autistic children. |

An Introduction to Nutritional MedicineThe term nutritional medicine often misleads doctors into thinking that the specialty primarily involves diets and lifestyle changes. Orthomolecular medicine is probably as better description but has a rather tarnished reputation. So we resort to the term nutritional medicine so as not to alienate out patients and colleagues. Page one of any pathology textbook will tell you that by the time disease is detectable by microscopy there must have involved a structural change. The structural change must have involved an alteration in the biochemistry in a direction away from the direction that nature intended. They will say look up a biochemistry book to find out what this change entails. The biochemistry books fail to link the pathobiochemistry with the clinical symptoms and everybody basically passes the buck. Nutritional medicine links the various specialties and tries to explain all the phenomena. Find out if nutritional medicine can alleviate your symptoms.

A Whirlwind Tour of Medicine: Destroying the Knowledge Pyramid.A system like the current Medical system functions on the basis of many assumptions like a knowledge pyramid, each stone placed upon the next over time. If the model works, then the users of such a system are generally happy with its conduct. Despite the current model being based upon “Science” with its randomized double-blind trials, Australians spend 2 billion dollars on alternative health care every year. The consumers are becoming dissatisfied and skeptical of a system that they perceive as treating illness “after the fact” and primarily using Doctors as the retail arm of the Pharmaceutical Companies. Without any scientific background the average person is questioning the stability of the stones at the bottom of the knowledge pyramid. Dr Tabrizian examines these shaky stones and why medicine does not want them disturbed. Take a look at the foundation of modern medicine .

Use of Hair Analysis in Chronic IllnessDoctors are not taught about the value of tissue samples for any application other than histopathology. Minerals with charges like sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, molybdenum and chromium are very easy to study because deficiencies of them give “tell-tale” symptoms. However, it is more fruitful to examine why minerals vary from the reference ranges. Variations from the reference ranges could also be due to incorrectly set management systems. The mineral level that is out of range is a message that the system is damaged or perhaps being influenced by a toxic compound. Toxic elements like arsenic, cadmium, lead and aluminium affect the nutrient mineral levels by pushing some minerals higher than the reference range. But sometimes you do not see that magnitude of the toxic load until you provoke the system to push out some of these toxins. At the end of the day, a test is not a diagnosis; it is just the beginning of another investigation. Take a look at the foundation of modern medicine .

Too Much, Too YoungWhy are we seeing Adult disease in Childhood? Why have we seen an unnerving rise in Cancer, Diabetes, Depression and Asthma in our children when 50 years ago these disorders were only found in Adults? Dr Tabrizian looks at the Biochemical causes of such diseases and demonstrates why these are happening at an earlier age. He also makes positive suggestions on how to correct such problems and what steps we can take as a community to stop the tide of ill health.

Nutritional Aspects of Arthritis Arthritis affects millions of people worldwide, with very narrow treatment choices from Mainstream Medicine apart from anti -inflammatory drugs. In the light of recent problems with the long-term use of these agents, many sufferers are looking to “natural” long-term therapies. Dr Tabrizian discusses how analyzing the different subtypes of arthritis biochemically can help find better and appropriate treatments. Dealing with the cause often leads to more efficacious and safer treatments. Dr Tabrizian discusses these options and why they are useful.

Brain Foods, Brain Poisons: Autism as a Case in PointThe lecture looks at normal brain function and development with regards to nutritional needs of the mother and child. It examines the importance of tissue co-operation such as hormones, gut and brain in ensuring correct development of all the tissues in the growing child. The lecture explains where brain function goes wrong in Autism and more importantly why this is happening as a global epidemic. It examines the roles of genetics and antioxidants in the prevention and treatment of Autism. We look at the roles of toxic metals in the genesis of the disease and how these generate the symptoms of Autism. Dr Tabrizian repeats his much talked about lecture on Autism given in Sydney in November 2004. This lecture was the basis for his famous book on Autism.

Nutritional Medicine Profiling in Cancer (Especially Breast, Prostate & Colon)In this lecture he will be talking about the common nutritional abnormalities seen in his Cancer practice. By using blood and hair analysis, the biochemical profile of a patient with cancer can be elucidated. Furthermore the patterns often explain the mechanism of the cancer and its progression. Most of these abnormalities are correctable. The final message is that 60 % of these predispositions could have been prevented by better nutrition and better Environmental Decisions could have prevented 95 % of cancers. On June 1st 2005, Dr Tabrizian had the Darwin Holistic Health Centre packed to the brim. This repeat lecture is for those who missed out. Anyone who has cancer or who wishes to avoid cancer is well advised to listen to this valuable talk.

Nutritional Aspects of DepressionThe rate of depression has been steadily rising in westernized countries, with higher suicide rates in the most affluent (but obviously unhappy) countries. The age of onset has been steadily falling to the point that 25% of Australian children have this diagnosis. Western Australia has three times the prescribing rate of antidepressants for children compared to any other Australian state. Dr Tabrizian examines the biochemical and toxicological aspects of this devastating disease with focus on supplements such as tryptophan, tyrosine and other Vitamin/Mineral combinations.

Diabetes: Nutritional InterventionsDiabetes is a growing concern in westernized countries and is appearing in younger people every day. Dr Tabrizian examines the biochemical and toxicological aspects of this modern day epidemic (both Type I and Type II) in his usual no-holds-barred style. In 1991 two researchers won a Nobel Prize for their work on "Channelopathies". This new term (yet to be included in our endocrinologists' vocabularies) has helped explain the reason why common treatments do not work in some patients with Diabetes. The roles of common supplements such Zinc, Chromium, Lipoic Acid and Amino Acids are discussed.

Haemochromatosis: Nutritional InterventionsHaemochromatosis is a combination of genetic and environmental diseases and is rapidly growing in incidence (parallel with Fatty Liver) in westernized countries. Eight percent of the WA population have genes that predispose them to this iron storage problem, but genetics only account for half of the cases diagnosed. Has medicine got it wrong? Dr Tabrizian examines the biochemical and toxicological aspects of the new Hepatology (study of liver disease) nightmare.

Nutritional Aspects of ImmunityBy the age of three months, the thymus gland has issued a full set of life-long instructions to the lymphocytes about how the immune system should behave under various scenarios. These instructions fall into 3 categories. Firstly, fight invaders like viruses, bacteria, and fungi. Secondly, shoot to kill any cells that don’t conform to known templates. Thirdly don’t shoot your own cells. This lecture explains how the immune system relies on nutrients to function correctly. It covers allergy (and hypersensitivity), auto-immunity and impaired immunity. It also covers the impact of toxic elements such as mercury and nickel on the immune system. There are 9 sections covered in this lecture which help to explain the biochemical/nutritional aspects of immunity. Each section sits in an isolated niche in the scientific literature, rarely visited by Medical Practitioners. However, when united, they provide a framework that allows clinicians to better understand individual problems such as allergy, hypersensitivity and impaired immunity.

Nutritional Aspects of Sleep DisordersThere must be an explanation behind the epidemic of “Sleep Disorders” and the flourishing of Sleep Disorder clinics. By subdividing the disorders into categories and analyzing the contributions of biochemistry to each type one can build up a profile of the Nutritional correlations within the Sleep Disorders. Astute practitioners can then prescribe safe and non-invasive treatments based on this analysis. Dr Tabrizian discusses these options and why they are useful.
